The Power of Reflection & Vision

One of the greatest privileges of leadership is guiding others toward a meaningful future. However, the truth is that before you can lead anyone else forward, you must first lead yourself. This journey begins with personal reflection.

Reflection goes beyond just looking back; it involves learning, understanding, and preparing for the future. By taking a moment to evaluate our experiences, we reveal patterns, strengths, and growth opportunities. This clarity becomes the fertile ground where vision begins to take root.

Vision, as I often say, is “the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination and wisdom.” It is a vivid picture of the future that ignites passion, aligns people, and moves them forward with purpose.

You cannot create a compelling vision without first engaging in deep reflection. Why is this important? Because true vision comes from within. Carl Jung expressed it perfectly, “Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Those who look outside dream; those who look inside awaken.” Reflection awakens us and helps in understanding what matters most, enabling a clearer vision of a possible future.

From a place of clarity, you can start to envision your goals before sharing them with others. Everything is created twice; first in our minds and then in reality. Leaders who take the time to reflect tend to lead more effectively because they can articulate a clear vision of the future for their teams.

As John Maxwell reminds us, “What you can see determines what you can be.” If your vision is unclear, it will appear as a foggy mass to those you lead. Reflection sharpens your perspective, allowing your vision to guide you and inspire others to follow.

Here is a challenge for you. Set aside 15 minutes this week for a personal inventory. During that time, ask yourself these three questions: What worked well this year? Where did I struggle? What do I want to be true in the next 12 months? As you reflect, write your answers down. This simple exercise will help you uncover insights that shape a powerful vision.
